To fully appreciate our students' perspective and the artistic choices in our design programs, one must understand the traditional values, sacred architecture, and ancestral rituals of the surrounding Puyuma lands.
Located just walking distance from our campus gates, this cultural complex serves as the spiritual heart of the Nanwang tribe. Hand-built using traditional structural techniques, the center features the three essential architectural institutions of Puyuma society:
Puyuma culture is deeply rooted in the concept of Biruwa—the belief that a spiritual presence lives within all natural elements, requiring a respectful connection with our environment. This deep spiritual connection is directly expressed through their intricate textile crafts and social structures.
Puyuma attire is hand-woven from hemp using combinations of bright red, yellow, and green natural dyes, balanced by precise black and white linear patterns. These designs feature complex geometric rhombs and detailed cross-stitch patterns that indicate an individual's gender, age, and social standing within the tribe. Young women wear elegant, colorful headbands and wrapped skirts, while experienced warriors wear detailed capes and carry short swords. Our master weavers and design students actively work to preserve these invaluable textile techniques.
This major summer festival celebrates the harvesting of the millet crop and expresses gratitude for ancestral blessings. Before the harvesting activities begin, tribal priests conduct morning divination ceremonies to ensure a favorable harvest. The highlight of the celebration is the construction of massive bamboo swings; traditional custom suggests that the higher members swing, the taller and more abundant the crops will grow in the next season.
This winter ritual is the most important season on the Puyuma calendar, serving as a rite of passage for young boys and warriors. The festival includes the Monkey Ritual (designed to build courage in young boys, now using grass-woven figures) and the Great Hunt (Mangayau), where young men journey into the mountains with elders to master wilderness survival, tracking, and hunting. Upon their return, tribal women build tall bamboo arches and welcome the men back with beautiful handmade flower wreaths.
The **Aputr** (Flower Wreath) represents one of the most visible symbols of Puyuma identity. Worn during both celebratory milestones and major life transitions, placing a fresh flower wreath on a family member or honored guest represents the highest form of respect, blessing, and welcoming love, serving as a beautiful symbol of our shared history.
